The mission of Lowell House’s Sober Houses is to provide a physically and emotionally safe, secure, and respectful home environment to foster an alcohol and drug-free lifestyle for all members.

Sober living houses are available to individuals who have completed an addiction treatment program.2 Each sober living homes will vary in terms of its house rules and regulations. They are environments free of substance abuse where individuals can receive support from peers who are also in recovery. There is no time limit on how long someone can live in a sober living house.

The house is located in a unique neighborhood adjacent to downtown Lowell, and within walking distance to the north campus of the University of Massachusetts. Lowell House assists people and their families to rebuild their lives and strengthen our communities by providing the resources, direct support, skills and freedom to live a life of purpose in recovery. For over 20 years Dr. Umhau was a senior clinical investigator at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). MaryBeth was born and raised in Boston and now lives in Haverhill, MA with her many pets. In her “spare” time, MaryBeth loves to relax at the beach and watch the Patriots. Over and eighteen year career in the field, MaryBeth has worked in clinical settings supporting and guiding individuals who present with various inner challenges. Her passion and mission is to promote independence while addressing and processing underlying sensitive issues such as trauma, life changes, and stressors. In 2014, David was instrumental in the effort to have fire fighters carry Narcan in Lowell, which has helped save countless lives and slow down the death rate from opiate overdose.

She and her husband, Rick, own Griffin Greenhouse Supplies, Inc. in Tewksbury, where she is a Special Events Coordinator, responsible for the successful implementation of domestic trade shows. Before joining Sarah Cannon, she was the Northeast Registry Supervisor for Client Services for Elekta as a Cancer Registry services team member. A lifelong Lowell resident, Cheryl Sheridan, is the Director of Oncology Data & Accreditation at Sarah Cannon, the Cancer Institute of HCA Healthcare. She is responsible for the oncology data management, accreditation, and registry operations across all 178 of their locations nationwide. Erin’s House, established in 2017, is in a quiet residential neighborhood located in Dracut, MA.
